How much is too much?

Dear Jen:

I recently had one of my final dress fittings and I decided to bring some jewelry along to see how it all fit together.I tried on earrings a necklace, two bracelets and a few rings. Also, Instead of a veil I'll be wearing a tiara in my hair. It all went together nicely but I can't decide if it's too much sparkle. How much is too much jewelry to wear?

Knowing how much jewelry to wear on your wedding day isn’t an exact science, but there are a few rules of thumb that might help you to choose the right amount of sparkle:

- Go big or go home. A large amount of jewelry does work for some, but mostly its about ‘wearing’ the jewelry. Big jewelry needs big personality, and if you have it, by all means indulge!  Food for thought though…if you think you are wearing too much jewelry, you probably are, so pare it down a bit.

- Accentuate the dress. Oftentimes your dress will dictate how much, and what jewelry to wear. If your dress has long sleeves, you probably won’t need any bracelets. If your dress has a high neck, a necklace probably isn’t necessary. You picked your wedding dress for a reason, don’t let unnecessary jewelry overshadow the main attraction!

- Less is more. Your guests are all excited to see you in your beautiful dress. The last thing you want is your perfect look overshadowed by too much jewelry. Your jewelry choices have the ability to make your look, or make it all wrong. Simple is sometimes the way to go.

- Tradition. Wedding jewelry is often a great way for brides to incorporate wedding traditions (that beautiful sapphire bracelet you had your eye on for your ‘something blue’), or pieces with great meaning (your mother’s earrings or your grandmother’s necklace). The key is making sure all of these pieces work together to create a beautiful look.

There are many directions you can go in when it comes to wedding jewelry, but at the end of the day, you have to do what makes you look and feel beautiful.
