Making a Home Together

Posted by Shannon Burke on June 15, 2009 3:27 pm

As I detailed in my last post, Dan and I have found somewhere that we would like to live after we are married. It was a really exciting day for both of us. I immediately started picturing my living room, filled with family and friends. I imagined our first cookout and thought about how happy I would be on even the quietest nights in. We both started talking about what we wanted to do with each room. These conversations initially worried me. You see, one of the first things that became pretty clear right after I started dating Dan was that we had very different styles. That is not something that one worries about after the first few dates, but was something that I often considered after things became more serious.

Dan lived in an apartment on his own for a while, so he has a good amount of furniture. I do not, however, want to be moving into Dan’s apartment; I want to move into OUR apartment. We decided what we wanted to keep from his belongings and put them into storage until our moving day.

We have completed two very important tasks in the past three weeks: we bought a living room set and registered for our shower/wedding gifts. I was amazed at how easy it was to agree on furniture, dishes, and decorations for our new home together. It was a lot of fun to march around the store with our scanning gun and think about how we would enjoy each thing together.

Next weekend my mom is mailing out the invitations to my shower. When we first decided to have this shower at the Dock at the Bay it seemed like our August 1st date was ages away. Now, it is only six weeks from now. My planning is beginning to wind down, but the big days of celebrations with those that mean that most to me are rapidly getting closer and closer – the wedding is less than four months away!
